Mr.  is extremely upset and disappointed with Stratos Jets as the plane had mechanical problems on take off which delayed the trip by 5 hours. It was his wife's birthday and the entire family had a full day of sightseeing arranged which had to be cancelled. The trip was very costly and he feels he is due back some compensation. I was thouroughly impressed with the professionalism of the Broker Joel, the flight organizer Sarah and the crew on both legs. The aircraft was clean, in good shape and right on time. The crew was friendly and professional to me and my guests. Two small issues were getting a tail number on less than 12 hours that made getting our rental cars more complex than necessary and more significant was being notified by our bank that you tried to bill my flight a couple times when I paid in full prior to first leg. All in all I would use them again but would encourage one contact who checks in daily a few days prior to flight rather than me having try to figure out who to call when it looked like a couple problems were coming up.

Delta Private Jets, a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, earlier this year launched Sky Access. You pay $8,500 and can fly as many empty legs as you want at no additional cost. You also get 20% off select fares on Delta’s airline flights. There is a $500 fee if you cancel or no show. Over this weekend 66 empty legs were listed, although some such as Ft. Lauderdale to Miami, all of 30 miles, wouldn’t even give you time to pop open a beer. More interesting was Washington D.C. to Chicago and New York to Sarasota. There were also Nantucket to New York and Las Vegas to San Francisco, however, they were both on Friday, so the wrong direction for most people, and that’s the point, and perhaps a good segue to discussing the some of the downsides.
Fliers with flexibility should sign up for empty-leg email lists of companies like Magellan Jets, who regularly send out emails selling discounted flights from, say, the plane of a corporate exec who flew to Los Angeles but is looking to offset his cost of getting the plane back to New York. “I wouldn’t say that the cost of flying private has gone down, but there are new ways of pricing charter that makes it more accessible,” says David Zipkin, co-founder and VP of Tradewind, the service known for semi-private flights in the Northeast and Caribbean. “In our case, we save people money with our shared charters, and we also sell discounted empty legs.”

Chartering a jet may seem easy with online brokers saying it just takes a few taps on your smartphone, and in some cases that may be true. You've read the stories:  "We're the Uber of private jets." But there’s more to chartering than just searching Google for a broker or browsing a list of operators, then calling and saying, “I have five people going to Phoenix and we want to leave Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. How much is a private jet? Do you have a G450?” When you charter on-demand, each trip you should spend the time to do some due diligence, and there are a wide variety of issues to cover. A few weeks ago, I was talking to one gentleman who told me a broker from a fairly well-known company was insisting a specific airplane type could fly a route nonstop. It couldn't.

The Hawker 750’s biggest advantage is in its cabin, a fuselage-stretch modification first enjoyed by the -800 series. If there are no empty leg flights for your exact itinerary and timing, LunaJets will search its proprietorial database to reroute an empty leg. This would be a private jet that would make an additional stop to pick you up at your departure airport, drop you off at your destination airport, or both. These stops incur an additional cost (landing fees, extra fuel) that LunaJets will negotiate with operators for the best possible deal. Although greater than an empty leg price, a rerouted empty leg will always be much less expensive than a full fare on-demand private jet price.

Some other examples of prices come from Avinode, which powers a charter marketplace for brokers and operators and gathers a large amount of data on pricing. Their recent data shows the average price per hour for return trips, for various aircraft. As noted above, these rates can vary depending on when you fly, where you fly and if your flight is one way or return, plus landing fees, ramp fees and any repositioning can all add to the costs. Always ask for a fully inclusive quote from your broker or operator.
Joel and Stratos are amazing! He made sure our flight was tailored perfectly and was very responsive and always available for contact. They catered specifically to our needs with late notice. The pilots were fantastic and patient, especially considering we had three animals and arrived 10 minutes before take-off. They provided the smoothest flight in the Hawker we’ve ever taken.
